Definition
adapter plate
A flat steel and brass component used to improve the hold on thinner workpieces. The angle plate converts the larger and widely spaced flux to smaller and closely spaced flux, which better grasps thinner workpieces.
angle plate
A workholding component used to establish an accurate 90° vertical surface. Angle plates are used to grind edges.
balance
The process of making a wheel round or concentric. Balancing may be accomplished through several methods, including truing with a diamond dresser.
base
The foundation of a grinding machine that supports all the other machine components.
column
A component at the top of the grinding machine that supports the spindle and vertical ways, and controls vertical motion of the grinding wheel.
crossfeed handwheel
A grinding machine component that controls movement along the saddle ways.
dress
To remove swarf, dull grains, and bonding material from a grinding wheel. Dressing sharpens the wheel.
electromagnetic chuck
A type of magnetic workholding device that produces a variable magnetic pull. When turned "on," the electromagnetic chuck can hold a variety of workpieces depending on the amount of direct current.
finishing
The final grinding operation intended to obtain the desired tolerance and surface finish.
fixture
A device that is used to position and hold a workpiece in place during grinding. Fixtures are normally used to hold smaller workpieces.
flux
Invisible lines of magnetic force produced by a magnet.
horizontal spindle
A grinding spindle with an axis that is oriented parallel to the table.
HSRT
Horizontal-spindle, reciprocating table. A type of surface grinding machine characterized by a spindle with an axis oriented parallel to a table that moves back-and-forth.
laminated V-block
A magnetic workholding component with a V-shaped groove down the middle of its body designed to hold round workpieces for light grinding. The laminated V-block sits on the magnetic chuck and extends flux while providing physical support.
magna-vise clamp
A two-piece magnetic clamping system with flexible fingers designed to hold nonferrous or very small workpieces during grinding.
magnetic chuck
A workholding device that is used to hold ferrous parts during grinding. Magnetic chucks can be permanent or electromagnetic.
magnetic chuck block
A magnetic workholding component that sits on the magnetic chuck and holds oddly shaped workpieces by extending flux and providing physical support.
magnetic parallel
A magnetic workholding device used to support warped or otherwise oddly shaped workpieces that would otherwise flatten out when magnetically chucked.
magnetic V-block
An electromagnetic workholding component with a V-shaped groove down the middle of its body designed to hold round, square, or rectangular workpieces.
nonmagnetic chuck
A workholding device that is used to hold nonferrous parts for grinding, usually with two jaws that grip and hold a workpiece in place.
oilstone
A fine-grained sharpening device that is typically lubricated with oil. Oilstones are used to remove minor abnormalities from workpieces and workholding devices.
permanent magnetic chuck
A type of magnetic workholding device consisting of a series of long magnetic inserts arranged side-by-side and interconnected within a grid of conductive material. The chuck is turned "on" by moving magnetic inserts inline with a conductive grid.
polarity
The direction of magnetic force. A line of polarity is a line of magnetic force, which must travel through a workpiece for the workpiece to be immobilized by a magnetic chuck.
reciprocating table
The grinding machine work surface characterized by the ability to move back-and-forth. Workholding devices hold the part on the reciprocating table.
relieved
Providing a clearance for subsequent machining operations.
roughing
An initial grinding operation that removes stock without regard to surface finish.
saddle
The component of a grinding machine that is attached to the ways of the base and through its own ways, allows motion in a third axis perpendicular to the axes of the other ways.
shim
A thin tapered metal component used to support a workpiece by filling small gaps or abnormal shapes.
spindle housing
A grinding machine component that contains the spindle.
surface grinding
A common grinding process that involves feeding the flat surface of a workpiece beneath a rotating grinding wheel as the workpiece reciprocates on a table.
surface grinding machine
A machine that grinds flat surfaces by feeding a workpiece beneath a rotating grinding wheel with the part held on a reciprocating table.
table handwheel
A grinding machine component that controls motion of the table along the base ways.
table reverse dogs
A control component of a grinding machine that reverses the direction of table movement at the end of a stroke.

A workholding device used when grinding certain types of nonferrous workpieces. A vacuum vise uses air suction to immobilize the workpiece.

A grinding wheel component that controls the incremental vertical motion of the wheelhead along the column ways.

A grinding machine component that is attached to the column ways and contains the spindle housing.
