## Glossary

Vocabulary Term Definition
acute triangle A triangle containing three angles that each measure less than 90 degrees.
angle A figure formed at the intersection of two lines.
arc A portion of the edge of a circle.
chord A segment connecting two points on a circle.
circle The figure formed by the group of points that are an equal distance from a point, or center.
CNC programmer The person responsible for the creation of a part program. The part programmer translates the workpiece design into program instructions for the CNC machine.
cosine In a right triangle, the ratio of the side adjacent the angle and the hypotenuse of the triangle.
decimal A representation of a fraction whose denominator is some power of 10.
denominator The expression in the bottom location of a fraction, below the fraction bar.
diameter The distance from one edge of the circle to the opposite end through the center.
division An operation that determines how many times a quantity is contained in another.
divisor The quantity by which a number is divided. The divisor resides in the denominator of a fraction.
equilateral triangle A triangle with three equal sides.
exponent A number or symbol that indicates the power to which an expression is raised.
hypotenuse In a right triangle, the side opposite the right angle.
inverse A fraction obtained by reversing, or inverting, the numerator and denominator. 4/5 is the inverse of 5/4.
inverse operation An operation that counteracts or undoes another.
isosceles triangle A triangle with two equal sides.
least common denominator The least common factor shared by two or more numbers that is used to find equivalent fractions.
multiplication An operation that describes the repetitive addition of numbers.
numerator The expression in the top location of a fraction, above the fraction bar.
obtuse triangle A triangle with one angle that is greater than 90 degrees.
percent One part in a hundred; the amount per hundred.
product The result of a multiplication operation.
Pythagorean theorem A mathematical rule describing how sides of a right triangle are related. The sum of the square of both sides equals the square of the hypotenuse.
quotient The result of a division operation.
radius The distance from the center to the edge of a circle.
ratio The relationship between two quantities expressed as a fraction.
right triangle A triangle containing an angle that measures exactly 90 degrees.
scalene triangle A triangle with no two equal sides.
scientific notation A system of condensing powers of ten.
sine In a right triangle, the ratio of the side opposite an angle and the hypotenuse of the triangle.
tangent In a right triangle, the ratio of the sides opposite and adjacent to the angle in question.
tolerance limit The boundaries of allowable variation from a specified dimension.
triangle A three-sided figure determined by connecting three points that are not part of the same line.
trigonometric ratio A ratio that describes a relationship between sides and angles of triangles.
vertex The point where the two sides of an angle or triangle intersect.
