## Glossary

Vocabulary Term | Definition |
---|---|

axis | An imaginary straight line used to describe the location of an object. Two or more axes are perpendicular to one another. |

circle | A figure formed by the group of points that are an equal distance from a shared point, or center. |

cosine | In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side adjacent to the angle divided by the hypotenuse. |

diameter | The distance from one edge of the circle to the opposite edge that passes through the center. |

hypotenuse | In a right triangle, the side located opposite the right angle. |

perpendicular | Forming right angles at the intersection of two lines. |

Pythagorean Theorem | A mathematical rule describing how the sides of a right triangle are related. The sum of the square of both sides equals the square of the hypotenuse. |

radius | The distance from the center of a circle to a point on its circumference. |

right triangle | A triangle containing one angle that measures exactly 90 degrees. |

sine | In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the hypotenuse. |

tangent | In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the adjacent side. |

triangle | A three-sided figure determined by connecting three points that do not share the same line. |

trigonometric ratio | A ratio that describes a relationship between a side and angle of a triangle. |

trigonometry | The branch of mathematics that addresses the measurements and relationships of a triangle and its parts. |
