Class Vocabulary
arc		A portion of a circle. From the center of an arc, you can draw a radius to any point on the arc.
diameter		The distance from one edge of the circle to the opposite end through the center. The diameter is two times the radius.
die punch		The tool typically attached to the upper portion of the die set that shapes or penetrates the sheet metal.
exponent		Another term for a power. The exponent is the smaller number above and to the right of the number being multiplied by itself.
hypotenuse		The longest side of a right triangle. The hypotenuse is always opposite the 90° angle in a right triangle.
leg		A side of a right triangle other than the hypotenuse.
power		A mathematical operation indicating how many times a number is multiplied by itself.
Pythagorean theorem		A formula that states that the square of a hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of its two sides. The Pythagorean theorem works only for right triangles.
radius		The distance from the center to the edge of a circle. If you multiply the radius of a circle by two, the result is the diameter.
right triangle		A triangle containing exactly one 90° angle. The other two angles must total exactly 90 degrees.
root		A mathematical operation indicating which unknown number, multiplied by itself a specific number of times, equals the number included inside the root sign.
square		A common power in which you multiply a number by itself once.
square root		The most common root, indicating which unknown number multiplied by itself equals the number inside the square root sign.
symmetrical		A quality in which all the features on either side of a point, line, or plane are identical. Both sides of a symmetrical part have the same dimensions.
tangent		A line, line segment, or ray that touches a circle at exactly one point.
