Class Vocabulary
axis
An imaginary straight line used to describe the location of an object. Two or more axes are perpendicular to one another.
circle
A figure formed by the group of points that are an equal distance from a shared point, or center.
cosine
In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side adjacent to the angle divided by the hypotenuse.
diameter
The distance from one edge of the circle to the opposite edge that passes through the center.
hypotenuse
In a right triangle, the side located opposite the right angle.
perpendicular
Forming right angles at the intersection of two lines.
Pythagorean Theorem
A mathematical rule describing how the sides of a right triangle are related. The sum of the square of both sides equals the square of the hypotenuse.
radius
The distance from the center of a circle to a point on its circumference.
right triangle
A triangle containing one angle that measures exactly 90 degrees.
sine
In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the hypotenuse.
tangent
In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the adjacent side.
triangle
A three-sided figure determined by connecting three points that do not share the same line.
trigonometric ratio
A ratio that describes a relationship between a side and angle of a triangle.
trigonometry
The branch of mathematics that addresses the measurements and relationships of a triangle and its parts.
