Vocabulary Term
Definition

.0001/.1

A key that sets the jog increment to .0001 inches or .001 mm. The first number, .0001, indicates that the spindle will move .0001 in. for each jog handle click, while .1 indicates the jog feed rate in inches per minute when pressing and holding the jog keys.

.001/1.

A key that sets the jog increment to .001 inches or 0.01 mm. The first number, .001, indicates that the spindle will move .001 in. for each jog handle click, while 1. indicates the jog feed rate in inches per minute when pressing and holding the jog keys.

.01/10.

A key that sets the jog increment to .01 inches or 0.1 mm. The first number, .01, indicates that the spindle will move .01 in. for each jog handle click, while 10. indicates the jog feed rate in inches per minute when pressing and holding the jog keys.

1-2-3 block

A metal block with dimensions measuring one, two, and three inches respectively. An operator can use a 1-2-3 block as a reference point to touch off tools during setup.

A axis

A rotational axis that describes rotary movement of the worktable. A axis movement is rotary motion around the X axis.

ATC FWD

A MDI/DNC mode key that initiates the toolchanger and replaces the current tool with the next sequential tool.

B axis

A rotational axis that describes rotary movement of the worktable. B axis movement is rotary motion around the Y axis.

centerline

An imaginary line that defines the center of a symmetrical part or tool. A tool's center line aligns with the tool path in a part program.

CHC

Classic Haas Control. A popular model of the Haas Automation®, Inc. CNC control. There have been several versions of the CHC since it was first released in 1988.

chip load

The thickness of a chip that is removed by one cutting edge of the tool. Chip Load is also measured as feed per tooth.

Classic Haas Control

A popular model of the Haas Automation®, Inc. CNC control. The earliest version of the Classic Haas Control was first released in 1988.

coolant offset

An offset that controls the position of the coolant spigot on some Haas machines. Coolant offsets correspond with H codes for each particular tool.

CURNT COMDS

The display key on the Haas control that shows fifteen lines of the current program, modal program values, and the position during runtime.

cutter compensation offset

An offset used on the mill that accounts for variations in tool diameter. Cutter compensation is necessary only for tools that travel in the X or Y axis.

diameter

The distance from one edge of a circle to the opposite edge through the center. A tool's diameter is always twice the size of its radius.

diameter geometry offset

An offset used on the mill that accounts for variations in tool diameter. Cutter compensation is necessary only for tools that travel in the X or Y axis.

ERASE PROG

A key in the LIST PROG mode key row that clears the last MDI line when in MDI mode.

external cut

Cutting that takes place on the exterior surface of a part feature, such as an edge or boss. Oversized external cuts may indicate that the cutting tool is too small.

gage line

The imaginary line marking the portion of the toolholder that matches the bottom edge of the machine spindle.

HANDLE JOG

An operation mode key that allows for the manual operation of tool movement via the handwheel or jog buttons.

HOME

A cursor key that moves a program quickly to its beginning or to the top of most displays.

homing

The process of sending the mill's spindle to its machine zero position. Homing the machine moves the spindle to its furthest positive point of travel in all three axes.

internal cut

Cutting that takes place on the interior surface of a part feature, such as a hole or a slot. Oversized internal cuts may indicate that the cutting tool is too large.

job sheet

A document that includes all manufacturing specifications for a lot of parts.

jog handle

A dial that is turned by hand in order to manually control CNC machine motions along the axes. The handle "clicks" in controlled, measured increments that an operator selects on the keypad.

jog increment keys

Keys that control the increments in which the machine will move when in HANDLE JOG mode. Includes .0001/.1; .001/1.; .01/10.; and .1/100.

lot

The number of similar parts made with a particular tooling setup.

machine zero

The position located at the farthest possible distance in a positive direction along the machine axes. The machine zero position is permanently set for each particular CNC machine.

MDI/DNC

An operation mode key that lets an operator either enter and execute program data without disturbing stored data when pressed once, or execute programs from a centrally located computer storage device when pressed twice.

NEXT TOOL

A function key used when setting tool offsets on a CNC mill or lathe. Pressing NEXT TOOL selects the next sequential tool from the tool changer.

offset

A numerical value stored in the CNC control that repositions machine components. Offsets are used to adjust for differences in tool geometry, part size, tool wear, and other variables.

OFFSET

The display key on the Haas control that shows the various programmed offsets. Pressing the OFFSET key multiple times toggles between the tool and work offset menus.

Parameter 206

SPIGOT POSITION. A parameter that controls the number of available spigot positions for use with coolant offsets.

part program

A series of numerical instructions used by a CNC machine to perform the necessary sequence of operations to machine a specific workpiece.

program zero

The position that acts as the origin for the part program of a particular workpiece. This position is unique to each workpiece design, and it is selected by the part programmer.

radius

The distance from the center to the edge of a circle. A tool's radius is always half of its diameter.

reference point

The common surface used to touch off every tool added to the mill's toolchanger. A reference point ensures that the control compensates for all the varying tool lengths.

Setting 40, TOOL OFFSET MEASURE

A setting that selects how the tool size in the tool geometry and wear offset columns is recognized for cutter compensation. Setting 40 TOOL OFFSET MEASURE can be set to either radius or diameter.

SPIGOT POSITION

Parameter 206. A parameter that controls the number of available spigot positions for use with coolant offsets.

tolerance

An unwanted but acceptable deviation from a given dimension. Tolerances indicate the allowable difference between a part feature and its intended design specifications.

tool geometry offset

Any offset that adjusts machine components to compensate for the unique shape of a particular cutting tool. On the mill, tool geometry offsets are tool length and cutter compensation offsets.

tool length offset

An offset used on the mill that accounts for variations in tool length along the Z axis. Each tool requires its own tool length offset, which is measured from the tip of the tool to the gage line.

TOOL OFFSET MEASURE

A function key that is used to enter the current Z axis location for the tool length offsets in the offset page during part setup.

wear offset

An offset that allows for the slight adjustment of the cutter location in all three axes. Wear offsets account for part deflection, tool wear, and other operating conditions.

work offset

An offset used to adjust the location of every tool loaded in the machine. On the mill, the work offset changes the position of the spindle in both the X and Y axes, and often the Z axis as well.

WRITE/ENTER

A key on the Haas control that acts as a general enter key, allowing the machinist to input information typed with the alpha and numeric keys.
