5 ME
A term used to describe the 6 main causes of problems: man, method, machine, material, measurement, and environment. 5 ME is often used to organize the parts of a fishbone diagram.
80-20 rule
A principle stating that, in general, 80% of problems or effects arise from 20% of causes or factors. Pareto charts are often used to demonstrate the 80-20 rule.
black box
A term used to describe the part of a process that is not completely understood. The internal workings of a machine could be considered a black box by the operator.
