Answers:
What is Tooling U?
Tooling U provides high-quality online training on a wide variety of industrial manufacturing topics.
What is included in my subscription to Tooling U?
A single Tooling U subscription gives a student unlimited access to the classes included with that particular subscription. Depending on the subscription purchased, a student will have access to some or all of the existing classes. All subscriptions provide access to matching class tests, TU tools, and the multiple features of the Student Center.
What is included in the classes?
Students take classes that offer detailed instruction via text-based lessons. The lessons are enhanced with photographs and other illustrations, along with audio voice-overs and full-motion video. In each lesson, you’ll find
Help
from faculty, an interactive dictionary of keywords in the lesson text, interactive note-taking capabilities and links to a searchable archive of articles related to the lesson content. You can communicate with instructors or fellow students through an online Forum.
Is there a teacher or instructor?
Tooling U classes are designed for learning "at your own pace." However, our content development staff routinely responds to questions and feedback submitted to our site regarding our training content. Also, if your educational institution uses Tooling U, a live teacher or instructor may also double as the administrator of the site.
What classes are available?
Classes are
currently available
in a wide range of topics, including math/print reading, safety, general CNC and control-specific classes, materials, metal cutting, stamping, quality, inspection, grinding, welding, soldering, and fasteners. More recently, we've added numerous maintenance related titles in electrical systems, motor controls, hydraulics/pneumatics, and mechanical systems.
How do I purchase classes?
You can view our price list here:

. Purchases can be made using a credit card securely online, by fax at (216) 706-6601, toll-free over the phone at (866) 706-8665, or by a corporate purchase order.
When are the classes offered?
Tooling U has a continuous enrollment model. All classes are available on-demand via the Internet. The classes are designed for you to work at your own pace so you can start or stop a class at any time, day or night, to suit your own schedule.
Do I get a certificate or a diploma?
Tooling U students receive a certificate for all successfully completed classes. Tooling U is not accredited as a degree-granting institution. However, certain classes may be available through degree-granting educational institutions, such as community colleges. In such cases, the course might be part of a degree or non-degree program, depending on the institution's policies and programs. All Tooling U classes are mapped to the standards established for precision machinists by NIMS, the National Institute for Metalworking Skills. We suggest that all students seriously consider pursuing NIMS certification. For more information, contact NIMS at
www.nims-skills.org
.
How long do the classes take? What if I don't have much time?
Tooling U classes typically require one to two hours of total effort (called "instructional time"). One of the benefits of Tooling U is that you can go at your own pace. You may stop and restart each class to suit your own schedule by bookmarking your location in a class.
Do I get a grade? Do the classes include tests?
All classes include online pretests and final exams. You will know your percentage score on your tests and be able to compare those scores to a national average.
Who will see my scores and know my progress?
Your scores and your progress in classes are seen only by you. However, if your employer or an educational institution provides you with access to our classes through a subscription, there is an “administrator” that can monitor your progress on our site.
How do I get hands-on training with machinery and tools?
Tooling U classes are designed to be used in a blended learning program. Your employer or educational institution will direct your hands-on training.
What are the minimum configuration requirements for my computer?
Your computer must have at least a 56K connection to the Internet and be running
Netscape Navigator
6.0 or greater or
Microsoft Internet Explorer
version 5.0 or greater (preferred). To watch the videos, you must have the latest
Flash Player
.
What if I have a slow internet connection?
The minimum Internet connection is a 56K modem. A faster connection will allow you to successfully view videos and listen to audio clips directly from the Internet. All of the Tooling U classes are still functional if you choose to disable the audio and video when you are working on a slow connection.
