SME Book "Lean Math" Receives Shingo Institute Publication Award

(CLEVELAND, Oct. 30, 2017)SME, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing the future leaders in manufacturing, is proud to announce its book, "Lean Math: Figuring to Improve," has received the 2017 Shingo Publication Award, one of the most prestigious honors presented to publishers and authors. The award recognizes publications contributing to and expanding on the knowledge of operational excellence.

Trained examiners and accomplished business professionals performed a thorough assessment of the book, which presents standard and specialized approaches to tackling the math required of lean and six sigma practitioners across all industries – seasoned and newly minted practitioners alike.

"We take great pride in providing the manufacturing community with the most effective and relevant content that they can trust," says Jeannine Kunz, vice president of Tooling U-SME, the training and development arm of SME. "With tools and resources such as the 'Lean Math' book, we're able to play a key role in improving manufacturing operations and the capabilities of its workforce."

SME partners with the industry's foremost authoritative figures to publish content that is relevant to manufacturing technologies, processes and business improvement practices. "Lean Math" is co-authored by lean experts Michael O'Connor, an internationally recognized continuous improvement expert, and Mark Hamel, partner and COO at The Murli Group. Hamel also authored SME's "Kaizen Event Fieldbook," which earned a Shingo Publication Award in 2010.

"Michael O'Conner and Mark Hamel have made significant contributions to transforming lean implementations across a broad range of industries, and partnering with them to write the 'Lean Math' book was a privilege." adds Kunz. "Receiving the Shingo Publication Award confirms that the work we're producing with partners like O'Conner and Hamel is making a difference in the advancement of the manufacturing industry."

The Shingo Institute is a program within the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. The institute is home of the Shingo Prize, an award that recognizes organizations that demonstrate an exceptional culture that fosters continuous improvement. The Shingo Institute is named after Japanese industrial engineer and Toyota advisor, Shigeo Shingo, PhD. Shingo distinguished himself as one of the world's thought leaders in concepts, management systems and improvement techniques that have become known as the Toyota Production System.

The 2017 Shingo Publication Award recipients will be honored during an awards ceremony at the 30th Shingo Conference in Orlando, Florida, April 9-13, 2018.
