The Power of Partnerships to Advance the Manufacturing Industry

For decades, Tooling U-SME has advocated for advancements in manufacturing, specifically as it relates to the professional development and training of the people who work in the industry. As we move into the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Tooling U-SME continues to identify opportunities to improve processes, boost productivity, strengthen product quality and ready our workforce for Industry 4.0. Partnerships with other organizations that support a strong, advanced manufacturing industry are key to accomplishing these goals.
Tooling U-SME recently announced a new partnership regarding additive manufacturing certification, as well as a national project to support a consortium of companies working on a national advanced robotics initiative.
The industry has been calling for a single source for professional additive manufacturing certification, and the latest partnership between Tooling U-SME and global safety science company UL is answering this call. Recently, Tooling U-SME and UL announced the signing of a new agreement to merge the organizations’ additive manufacturing certification programs. This move will greatly benefit manufacturers looking to increase their capabilities in additive manufacturing as well as educators who teach the future workforce on new advanced technology topics.
On the robotics front, Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing — a Manufacturing USA Institute — announced the recipients of its first round of funding for projects to advance robotics technology and workforce innovation. Tooling U-SME is part of one of the four project teams being awarded $2.8 million in funding to develop technologies that will make an impact on the national manufacturing ecosystem. With a consortium of partners from various disciplines — including Tooling U-SME, GE Global Research, Southwest Research Institute, IEEE GlobalSpec, Vistex, Fuzehub and Army Benet Laboratory — the Robot Assistant for Composites Manufacturing team plans to develop an operator-guided, semiautomatic assembly process using industrial robots integrated with multiple sensors. Tooling U-SME will identify the job roles impacted by the technological advancements and define the competencies required to support the new technology.
Involvement in projects such as the ARM initiative and partnerships with organizations like UL is key to the continued advancement of the manufacturing industry. And we look forward to greater things in front of us!
