Measurement Inspection and Gaging Level 1

Measurement, Inspection, and Gaging Level 1 provides fundamental lessons in proper interpretation of engineering drawings used in inspection of parts which have geometric controls applied per ANSI Y14.5. This course presents methods for developing and improving inspection skills. Through review of technical reports, examination of standards and evaluation, recommendation and incorporation of measurement equipment manufacturers practices, participants will learn how to optimize inspection equipment and reduce inappropriate measurement procedures.

Class Details

Class Name:
Measurement Inspection and Gaging Level 1
Anyone who must read and interpret engineering drawings and want to develop or improve their understanding of the basics of measurement tools, geometric symbology and engineering drawing interpretation, as well as dimensional metrology and geometric conformance and recommended determination practices as applied per ANSI Y14.5M-1994.
3 Day Course

Learning Objectives

  • Measure a part's geometric characteristics
  • Determine which parts conform to the Geometric Product Definition per Part Measurement standards
  • Compare inspection techniques such as: surface plate setups, CMMs, graphical inspection techniques, and receiver gages (go gages/functional gages)
  • Interpret multi and sectional view drawings
  • Handle and read measurement tools
  • Shorten inspection time, decrease product cost and increase quality by eliminating wasted or inappropriate measurement procedures
  • Select most appropriate measuring machine and/or tools to collect a specific data
  • Write an inspection plan given product's functional requirements and specific inspection constraints (tool/machine availability, operator knowledge etc.)

Outline At-a-Glance

  • Receiver Gages
  • Variable Data Collection
  • Datums
  • Material Conditions and Their Ramifications
  • Positional Controls
  • Tolerance Zone Examination
  • Comparison of Tolerance Zones and Conformance Criteria
  • Summary of Gaging Techniques (CMM, Receiver Gages, Surface Plate Setups, Optical and Graphical Techniques)
